D dominates in Redmen Win

by Greg Sakaki - Nanaimo News Bulletin, September 4, 2008

The Nanaimo Redmen offence wasn't at its absolute best, but it didn't need to be.  The city's Vancouver Mainland Football League midget team won its season opener Sunday in Duncan, 22-0 over the Cowichan Bulldogs.

The Bulldog's offence never crossed the midfield all game, and only registered two first downs, one on what Redmen coach Sean Roden called a questionable pass-interference penalty.

Offensively, the Redmen were without tailback Judd Thompson but still put up more than enough points.

Brett Pippy had a rushing touchdown and quarterback Darren Russell threw lon TD passes to Matt Boyce.

"We did move the ball effectively most of the time and yet failed to score as often as we should have," said Roden.  "Small mistakes at the wrong time killed several drives in the red zone."

Nanaimo is home at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park to take on the Victoria Warriors Sunday (Sept. 7) at 3:00 pm

Grid Bits... The Nanaimo Redmen bantam team won its season opener 24-20 Sunday in Victoria.  Todd Hansen made the game saving play when he forced a Victoria fumble late in the fourth quarter.
